A Mikhail Gavrilenko goal with six minutes to play in the final period proved to be the difference as the Helena Bighorns nipped the Great Falls Americans 3-2 Friday at the Great Falls Ice Plex.

The Americans’ contest against the Bozeman Ice Dogs on Saturday night was still in progress when the Tribune went to press. See gftrib.com for details.

Matt Larson knotted the game up for Great Falls 11 minutes into the opening frame on an assist from Ben Rinckey before Richard Groskops put the Bighorns ahead in the second on a dish from Hayden Seitz and Jarett Schneibel.

Jens Juliussen set up  Payton McSharry for a score with 9:44 to play to tie the game at 2-all before Gravilenko’s deciding goal just a few minutes later.

The Americans of head coach Jeff Heimel (13-5-2-0) were sitting in second in the NA3HL Frontier Division Saturday heading into the contest with the last-place Icedogs (1-18-0-0).
