A third period goal from Declan Young was enough to boost the Gillette Wild  to a 2-1 victory over the Great Falls Americans Saturday night, giving the two teams a split of their season-opening weekend series at the Great Falls Ice Plex.

Young’s goal came off assists from Caleb Sanborn and Tyler Kaminski just five minutes into the final stanza.

The Wild took the early lead in the first period when Nathaniel Fanning scored past Americans’ keeper Trever Mellen, but Brody Boyce got the equalizer three minutes later on feeds from Logan Rachow and Justin Ohnstad.

On Friday night, the Americans started their year off with a 7-1 mashing of the Wild. Dylan Olson, Levi Mese, and Jake Hayes each had two goals for the winners, and returning goalie Viktor Wennberg saved 39 of the 40 shots he faced.

The Americans (1-1-0-0, 2 pts.) will travel to Butte for a match against the Cobras Thursday night at 7:30 at the Community Ice Center before returning home to the Ice Plex Saturday at 7:30 against the same Butte squad.
