GREAT FALLS, Mont., March 14, 2014 —The #2 seeded Great Falls Americans hosted their first playoff series since the team came back three season ago against the #3 Gillette Wild on Friday night at the Great Falls Ice Plex in front of a season best 1,026 fans for game three of the AWHL Semifinals. Great Falls trailed 2-1 with 2:01 left in regulation when Donovan Mattfeldt scored on the unassisted play to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, Gillette defeated the home team 3-2 in the second overtime.

Great Falls and Gillette battled hard on both ends of the rink throughout the game. The Wild took a 1-0 on Bryce Mitzel’s power play score with 4:54 remaining in the first period. Greg Sauers and Shane Brown received the assists on the only scoring drive for either team. Both teams combined for 30 shots on goal after twenty minutes of play.

The Americans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the second period (37 seconds to be exact) Aaron McInnis and Donovan Mattfeldt got the puck to an open Dylan Garton to tie the contest at 1-1. Gillette responded 12 minutes later with their second power play goal and broke the tie. Trent Dillinger registered his first goal of the series with Alex King and Andril Istominov assisting for the Wyoming club. Gillette held a 31-26 advantage in the shots on goal category after forty minutes.

Great Falls goaltender Erik Powell didn’t allow any shots to get by him in the third period and Great Falls chipped in their second goal of the evening with 2:01 left in regulation. Donovan Mattfeldt scored the unassisted goal to send the game into overtime.

Neither Great Falls nor Gillette were able to score after one five minute overtime period. Gillette’s Bryce MItzel added his second goal of the game in the second overtime to give the visiting team the win and another game against the Americans. Assisting on the game-winning score were Will Fobair and Darren Banks.

Despite the loss, Great Falls out-shot Gillette 72-49 including the third period which saw Great Falls tack on 23 shots on goal. The American converted on just one of their eight power play chances. Sean Kelley was credited with the win as the Gillette goaltender allowed two of the 72 shots he faced get by him. Erik Powell added 46 saves to his season stats.

The Americans now take a 2-1 series lead with game four on Saturday night (March 15th) at 7:30 p.m.

The Helena Bighorns wrapped up their series against the Billings Bulls with a 5-2 victory. Helena will await the winner of the Great Falls-Gillette series for the AWHL championship.

NEXT CONTEST: The Americans will return to the Great Falls Ice Plex on Saturday, March 15th at 7:30 p.m. for Game 4 of the best-of-five series. If the Wild win, the fifth and final game of the series would be on Sunday, March 16th with a 4:00 p.m. start time.
