GREAT FALLS, Mont., January 11, 2014 — For the second time in two days, the Great Falls Americans hockey team have had their fans on the edge of their seats. A night after the Americans posted a 5-4 overtime victory over the Glacier Nationals in Whitefish, the second place Americans finally returned to their home ice against the fourth place Billings Bulls on Saturday night after having been on a month long road trip the since December 1st.
Great Falls and Billings were scoreless for the first four periods of action before Dylan Garton secured the winning score (and the only goal of the game) in the second overtime at the Great Falls Ice Plex in front of 823 anxious fans. The Great Falls native scored his 12th goal of the season with Cody Page and Lucas Stover providing the assists to give the Americans their 25th victory of the season. Page now has 19 total assists while teammate Stover recorded his 11th of the season.
Defense was a big part of the first four periods of action during the Great Falls Americans contest against the visiting Billings Bulls as each team had trouble getting the puck in the net. Neither team could connect on their combined eight power play opportunities.
In the end, the Americans were able to out-shoot the Bulls 46-22 including a 19-4 advantage in the first period. The game saw a total of 10 penalties incurring 20 minutes of penalty time.
Erik Powell stopped all 22 shots that he faced against the Billings club while Daniel Oordt made 45 saves for the Bulls.
Great Falls continues to sit in second place in the AWHL with a 25-6-1 record while fourth place Billings falls to 14-15-2.
NEXT CONTEST: The Americans head to the Capital City to face the Helena Bighorns in the battle of the top two teams in the American West Hockey League on Wednesday night before returning home on Friday night against the Bozeman Ice Dogs.
