HELENA, Mont., January 15, 2014 — The Great Falls Americans came into this AWHL contest with rival Helena winning only one of the five previous meetings with the Capital City team this season. Their lone victory was a 2-1 victory back on November 9th. Could Great Falls find a way to get another win was the question of the night?

Great Falls made a great run in the third period and overcame a three goal deficit to tie Helena and send the game into overtime before Helena’s Sebastian Hansson found the back of the net to secure a 4-3 decision at the Helena Ice Arena on Wednesday night in front of 307 fans.

After Dylan Webster’s opening period goal, Helena tacked on two more goals (Brandt Miller and Theo Campe) in the second to give the Bighorns a 3-0 advantage. Damon Hanson and Sebastian Hansson assisted on Webster’s first period goal while Miller’s score went unassisted and Parker Olson set up Campe’s power play opportunity.

The Americans would not go down without a fight in the final 20 minutes of action as Steven Goran would score two goals including one on a power play and Aaron McInnis chipped in a power play goal of his own to send the AWHL’s battle of the top two teams in overtime. Cody Page and Dylan Garton each picked up two assists. Goran assisted on McInnis’ score.

Helena’s Sebastian Hansson made sure the Bighorns would continue their 17 game winning streak by capitalizing on his power play goal opportunity off the sticks of Theo Campe and Nick Okada in the extra period.

Great Falls out-shot the host Bighorns 24-9 in the third period as both teams combined for 91 shots on goal (Helena out-shot Great Falls 47-44) in the game.

The Americans made Helena goaltender Austin Brihn work all night by taking 44 shots. Erik Powell registered 43 saves for the Americans. Powell now has 682 saves for the season.

Top-seeded Helena is now at 30-1-1 in the AWHL standings followed by Great Falls at 25-6-2.

NEXT CONTEST: The Americans will be at the Great Falls Ice Plex on Friday, January 17, 2014 as they take on the Bozeman Ice Dogs. The contest begins at 7:30PM.
