WHITEFISH, Mont., October 20, 2013 — After shutting out the Glacier Nationals in their first meeting in September at home, the Great Falls Americans Junior A hockey team picked up where they left off with an 8-3 road victory over the team based out of Whitefish. Great Falls hasn’t experienced the road much this season as this was only their second road trip after having been at home for seven of their first nine games this season.
The Americans had a 3-1 advantage after the first period. Glacier’s Jackson Schroeder responded for the Nationals on a power play goal three minutes into the game off assists from Adam Dalton and Chris Cutshall. Great Falls rose to the occasion with straight goals to end the period as Aaron McInnis, Steven Goran and Cody Page each got the puck past Glacier goalie Ethan Wiese. Six different players for Great Falls picked up assists including Lucas Lomax, Erik Gatson, Dylan Garton, Cody Page Max Kaercher and Zachary Mese.
Each team would find the back of the net twice in the second period. Erik Gatson struck first before Steven Goran picked up his second goal of the evening for the coach Jeff Heimel’s squad. Karson Frisk and Chris Cutshall added two goals for the Nationals near the end of the period to cut the Glacier deficit to 5-3.
The Nationals could not stop the Americans in the final period as Dylan Garton registered two goals off power play opportunities off passes from Brady Christiaens, Connor Barta and Zachary Mese to help the Americans stay undefeated in the American West Hockey League on Sunday night.
Evan Hauser stopped 23 of the 26 Glacier shot attempts while Glacier goaltender Ethan Wiese had 68 saves allowing eight goals in 60 minutes of action.
The Americans converted on two of their seven power play opportunities while Glacier went one for nine. Great Falls finished with a 76-26 advantage on shots on goal.
The Great Falls Americans improve to 9-0 while Glacier, in their first season in the AWHL, fall to 6-6.
