GREAT FALLS, Mont., January 24, 2014 — The Helena Bighorns offense built a 3-0 lead after two periods and went on to defeat the Great Falls Americans 6-1 on Friday night as 858 spectators watched the battle of the top two teams in the AWHL at the Great Falls Ice Plex.

Parker Olson and Corbin Belling were able to each add one goal apiece for Helena during first period action. Logan Henne and John Petersson assisted on both scoring plays. The Bighorns out-shot the Americans 19-9 after 20 minutes of play.

Damon Hanson took advantage of a power play as he tacked on the only goal for either team five minutes into the next period. Theo Campe and Austin Buckholtz tallied the assists on the first of four power play scoring drives on the night to give the Bighorns a three-goal lead. Helena doubled the shot attempts on goal against the Americans (37-18) after the first two periods.

Cody Page cut into Helena’s lead on a power play goal 3:40 into the third period. Dylan Garton and Steve Goran provided the assists. Corbin Belling scored the next two goals of the evening for Helena with Nick Okada, Parker Olson and Theo Campe assisting on the back-to-back scores. After assisting on two first period goals, Henne got the puck by the Americans goaltender for the final score with less than four minutes left in regulation.

Three of Helena’s scores came on power play opportunities while Cody Page’s score was the only one for Great Falls. In the end, the offensive effort by the Bighorns was too much for Great Falls with Helena out-shooting the Americans 55-30 on shots-on-goal opportunities.

Austin Brihm picked up the win with 29 saves while Evan Hauser and Erik Powell combined for 49 saves as Great Falls lost for only the seventh time this season.

Both teams combined for 44 minutes of penalties on 19 infractions.

Helena improves their first-place record to 33-1-1 on the season. Meanwhile, Great Falls is still in second place as their record is now 27-7-2.

NEXT CONTEST: The Americans will finish the month of January on home ice as the Gillette Wild come to town for a pair of games on Thursday and Friday night (January 30th and January 31st). Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
